Take the European classical music and the instruments, mix them with originally African percussion instruments and you’ll get an idea of what Charanga is. This style originated in the 1920’s, and is a typical example of the musical crossovers that took place between the African, Native American and European population. Part of Charanga 214’s repertoire consists of more traditional repertoire that goes from Danzón (instrumental compositions with a usually danceable ending), Cha Cha Chá to Charanga; this stands both for the instrumentation (with violins & flute), as for the rhythm and ‘feel’ of this music. Especially Charanga is oftenly being accounted for as ‘Salsa’-music (because of the danceability), but this a misconception: this is not just Salsa with a couple of string-players, but a complete music style on its own! On the other side the group has a more progressive style, that is being performed with 3 trombones and sometimes even with a Tres (Cuban string-instrument). This repertoire consists of all kinds of extremely danceable rhythms, such as ‘Songo’, ‘Changuď and of course the most excentric of all, a style called ‘Timba’! And of course the big question: why the number ‘214’ in the name? Very simple, the orchestra started rehearsing in room ‘2.14’ of the Conservatory in Rotterdam!
